Lowther Castle

Lowther Castle and gardens (30 mins drive), near Penrith featuring the lost castle, a huge adventure playground great for children. If you love architecture and gardens, they have now planted up the inside of the ruined castle and rediscovered some of the old gardens. A magical place wether you are young or old.

Brough Icecream Parlour

Brough castle ice cream parlour, delicious ice-cream, cafe and a playground. The ice-cream is made using the farms own pasteurised milk. Brough Castle was originally occupied by the Romans, the latest ruin is from 1200 to the 1700’s. Excellent views of Stainmore and then down the Eden Valley. (10 mins drive or a 40 minute walk)

Rheged

The Rheged discovery centre Penrith, art gallery, cafe, cinema and shopping all under one green roof. There is a new exhibition each season, events for children during the holidays and a cinema which shows a latest childrens movies along with old classics, Ballet and Opera. Perfect to visit if the weather is wet or if you are on your way back from the North Lakes. (30 mins drive)

Kennedys Chocolate Factory

A great place to browse the delicious chocolates, or pick up a hot drink or icecream. A perfect break from a long walk on the surrounding fells.

Kong Adventure

Kong Adventure is an activity centre based in Keswick. They have a range of indoor and outdoor activities. On a rainy day take the kids to the indoor play area, or book them and yourselves into a lesson on the climbing wall.

If the weather is good then take a look at their outdoor activities and enjoy all the Lake District has to offer.

Ullswater

Ullswater is the second largest lake in the English Lake District. At the nearest end of the lake; Pooley Bridge is 40 minutes from the barns, and at the far end of the Lake, Glenridding is a 50 minute drive.

Walk around the lake,
Hire a boat on the lake,
Catch a steamer,
or swim in the lake.

Aira Force

Aira Force a spectacular waterfall on the edge of Ullswater, probably the most famous of the Lake District waterfalls, Aira Force provides a glimpse of a landscaped Victorian park with dramatic waterfalls, arboretum and rocks scenery. The main force falls 70 feet from below a stone footbridge and is on land owned by the National Trust. Drive straight there (50 mins) or catch a boat from Glenridding.

Wensleydale Creamery

Wensleydale Cheese Factory at Hawes (30 mins drive). Tour the factory, taste the cheese and shop. On Tuesdays there is sometimes a Cumbria Classic Bus that can take you there from Kirkby Stephen.

Lingholm Kitchen Garden

The Lingholm Kitchen Garden (50 mins drive). Next to Derwentwater, beautiful walks and a great cafe.

You can get to Lingholm by car with a free car park for customers, catch the Keswick Launch to Hawes End or Nichol End jetty’s then it’s a short stroll along the footpath or arrive by foot along the Catbells path which is just a 10 minute walk from Portinscale or a ﬂat, gentle 35 minute walk from Keswick.

The Lakes Distillary

Lakes Distillery (1 hour drive)- tour the distillery sample the Gin, Whiskey or Vodka and enjoy lunch/ supper in their lovely bistro. The Location at the base of Bassenthwaite means you are surrounded by the fells, a beautiful location. Close to Keswick you can visit here at the same time as Whinlatter, King Kong Climbing Centre, or Lingholm Kitchen or simply as a reward after climbing Catbells.

Whinlatter Forest

Whinlatter is home to stunning views, fantastic walks, exhilarating mountain biking, rare wildlife and adventure play. Drive Time (1hr)
